The bigger the transformation in our lives, the more patience it requires.
This is a hard truth to accept, but it’s a truth nonetheless—one that’s really schooling me right now.
I’ve written before about patience and the need to understand what it looks like in a world obsessed with metrics and instant results.
Patience comes in waves. One moment it’s natural and reaching for the sky, the next moment it’s like residual foam washing up on the shore, seemingly without purpose.
The beautiful and loving response to this juxtaposition is to accept both the highs and the lows, navigating them with compassion. Being gentle with yourself when the lows seem to outnumber the highs.
I’m facing a low right now, which means there is little to no patience for becoming someone I’ve never been before. I’m more concerned about outside perspectives than I am about searching inward to foster the patience that leads to true growth.
The opposite of patience is turmoil, chaos, anxiety, and self-sabotage. Yet we still don’t choose patience. We still find it hard to wait. Our commitment falters when we can’t see the results we hoped for.
Having patience is an ongoing struggle, one that will be part of every stage of our lives. So instead of being frustrated that I can’t reach a place of sustained patience, I must continue to deepen my understanding of what being patient means to me.
The goal isn’t to master patience but to befriend it—to recognise it as the companion that walks alongside transformation, sometimes steady, sometimes stumbling, but always essential for the journey of becoming who we’re meant to be.
